Motorists have been urged to delay all travel across KZN as freezing temperatures and hazardous conditions force widespread road closures, reports The Witness.

The N3 between Estcourt and Harrismith has now been closed, with authorities intensifying the province’s Snowfall Response Plan as heavy snow and icy conditions continue to affect key routes.

The decision to halt the movement of trucks along the N3 aims to prevent congestion and reduce the risk of motorists becoming trapped should conditions deteriorate further.

The Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), following consultations with the N3 Toll Concession and the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), announced the closure of several routes as authorities respond to the severe weather.

The affected routes are:

• R617: Closed between Kokstad and Underberg.
• Van Reenen Pass: Designated an extremely hazardous area due to black ice.
• N3: Closed between Estcourt and Harrismith.
• R74 Oliviershoek Pass: Closed between Harrismith and Bergville.
• R74 Greytown/Colenso Road: Closed.
• R103 and Tugela Toll Plaza: Closed.

Meanwhile, authorities have explicitly prohibited snow chasers from travelling to the affected areas.

Authorities are continuing to monitor conditions as heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures create hazardous driving conditions across parts of the province.
