Double murder in Knysna following former mayor’s killing
Police are appealing for information after two men were gunned down in Bongani, just a day after an ANC councillor was killed.
Western Cape serious violent crime detectives have launched a manhunt for the gunmen behind a shooting that left two Knysna men dead on Thursday evening (August 20), just one day after the murder of former Knysna mayor and ANC ward councillor Aubrey Tsengwa, reports George Herald.
According to a statement from the Office of the Provincial Commissioner Western Cape, the two deceased – aged 47 and 48 – were in a vehicle in Bongani when they came under fire at approximately 21:00 from unidentified gunmen.
The provincial Serious Violent Crimes (SVC) detective team that had already been investigating Wednesday evening’s shooting of Tsengwa has been reinforced.
Additional SVC detectives are now in the area probing both incidents.
Police are investigating whether the two shootings are linked. The motive for both remains under investigation.
No arrests have yet been made.
Tsengwa (48), a sitting Ward 8 councillor – covering Concordia and Joodsekamp – and former executive mayor of Knysna from August 2022 until February 2025, was shot dead on Wednesday night in Ngxalo Street, Joodsekamp.
He was driving with three passengers when an unknown man approached the vehicle and opened fire before fleeing on foot.
Tsengwa sustained multiple gunshot wounds to the head and upper body and was declared dead at the scene.
One passenger was wounded in the arm and taken to hospital. Police are investigating the murder and three counts of attempted murder.
Anyone with information that could assist the ongoing investigations is urged to contact SAPS Sgt Nobuntu Thundezwa on 082 522 1251.
