A 47-year-old Boschkop man accused of attempted murder for allegedly concealing his HIV-positive status from his girlfriend is due back in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court today (August 27) to determine a regional court date, reports Pretoria Rekord.

The man was granted R2 000 bail following allegations that he concealed his status from his 38-year-old girlfriend.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the couple was in a relationship from October 2025 to June 2026. The man allegedly told the woman that he was HIV negative.

NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana says the woman discovered antiretroviral medication in his bag on June 26 and confronted him.

The man allegedly admitted that he was HIV positive and further allegedly said he had intentionally infected her because he did not want her to be in a relationship with another person.

The woman underwent an HIV test at a medical facility on July 25 and was informed that she had tested positive, according to the NPA.

She reported the matter to police the following day and the accused was arrested at their home.

The state did not oppose bail, as the accused was not considered a flight risk.

The court found that it was in the interests of justice to release him on bail of R2 000.

Today’s appearance is expected to determine when the matter will proceed in the regional court.

The allegations against the accused have not been tested in court and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
