Limpopo university security officer dies after hammer attack
Students chased down and handed a man to police after his girlfriend was attacked with a hammer, allegedly by him, at the University of Limpopo.
A 44-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged murder of his girlfriend, a 37-year-old security officer at the University of Limpopo, following a violent attack at her workplace in Mankweng on Saturday (September 12) reports Polokwane Review.
A brutal attack on campus
According to police, the man arrived at the university campus at around 20:40, where the woman was on duty.
He allegedly attacked her with a hammer, striking her on the head and leaving her with serious injuries.
Caught by the witnesses
The suspect then attempted to flee the scene by car.
Students who witnessed the attack reportedly gave chase, forcing him to abandon the vehicle and continue on foot before he was caught and handed over to police.
A fatal outcome
Paramedics rushed the woman to Mankweng Hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Charge escalates as victim dies
The suspect was initially charged with attempted murder, but this has since been changed to murder following her death.
The alleged murder weapon has been recovered, and while a motive has not been confirmed, police say domestic violence has not been ruled out.
He is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Monday (September 14).
Investigations
Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers condemned the killing, praising the swift response from both police and students.
“This tragic incident is a painful reminder of the devastating consequences of violence against women.
“We commend the swift response by our members and the assistance rendered by the students, which contributed to the apprehension of the suspect.
“The police will conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that justice takes its course,” said Scheepers.
Members of the public are urged to report incidents of domestic violence before they escalate.
