Country singer Tommy Dell is recovering in hospital three weeks after he was seriously injured in a fatal crash on the R40 near Mbombela, reports the Lowvelder.

Family spokesperson Ignaz Streicher confirmed that Dell sustained multiple fractures in the September 5 crash and remained in hospital as he continued his recovery.

Dell, who is also a radio presenter at Bok Radio in Cape Town, now faces mounting medical costs after his hospital plan was exhausted.

The station has launched a BackaBuddy campaign to help cover his treatment and appealed to the public to assist with the cost of keeping him in hospital until he is strong enough to return home.

According to Bok Radio, his care costs between R80 000 and R100 000 a day.

More than R200 000 had been raised by the time of publication, with the campaign target set at R1 million.

“Tommy [Dell] is such a positive, loving human being who will do anything for anybody, and he has touched so many hearts with his music and positive attitude over the years that we believe we will be able to reach this target,” the station said.

Dell was travelling with country music promoter Mara van der Bergh and her assistant Samantha Fuller after a country fundraiser at Bosjol on September 5 when their vehicle was involved in the crash.

According to Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi, their sedan collided with a bakkie.

Van der Bergh and Fuller were killed in the crash.
