4 dogs die after suspected poisoning in Randburg
Laced mince found in a residential Gauteng neighbourhood prompted community leaders to raise the alarm after several household pets were targeted.
Dog owners in Randburg have been warned to check their yards for suspicious food after a series of poisoning incidents left four dogs dead in Jukskei Park.
The warning from the Douglasdale Community Policing Forum (CPF) comes after six dogs were targeted. Four died while two recovered following veterinary treatment, reports the Randburg Sun.
Pieces of mince suspected of containing poison were found in the area and a veterinarian later confirmed the substance was toxic, according to the CPF.
The incident comes days after the Kempton Park SPCA raised the alarm over alleged dog poisonings in Bonaero Park.
The CPF urged Jukskei Park residents to remain vigilant and watch for suspicious food or substances that may have been thrown over their walls.
It said there was currently no indication of a motive, such as a targeted attack or dispute involving a particular household. No similar incidents had been reported in Jukskei Park or nearby suburbs during the previous six months.
According to the CPF’s safety alert, poisoned meat, sausages and other food can be thrown over walls and may contain substances such as organophosphates or rat poison.
Pet owners were urged to secure their properties, avoid leaving dogs unsupervised outside and train them not to eat food from the ground or from strangers.
Residents should also check their yards regularly for suspicious items.
The CPF advised owners to watch for symptoms such as vomiting and abnormal behaviour and to seek veterinary assistance immediately if they suspect their dog has been poisoned.
