2 due in court over fatal attack at Ottosdal farm
North West police have pledged to work with farmers to strengthen crime-prevention measures after an alleged farm attack left a woman dead.
Two men are expected to appear in the Ottosdal Magistrate’s Court today (October 8) in connection with the murder of a woman in an alleged farm attack in the North West.
Hannetjie van Zyl (55) was stabbed with an unknown object while attempting to open a gate at Doornpan Farm near Ottosdal on Monday (October 5).
North West police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said when officers arrived at the farm, they were informed that Van Zyl’s husband had transported her to a hospital in Klerksdorp, where she later died.
Witness identification leads to arrests
Police said a witness identified two suspects, aged 32 and 33, while a third suspect remains at large.
North West provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Arthur Peter Adams condemned the incident and commended the investigating team for the swift arrests.
“The safety and security of people living and working in rural areas remains a priority for the South African Police Service,” said Adams.
“We are deeply concerned by this tragic incident and extend our condolences to the Van Zyl family.”
Police pledge to strengthen rural safety
Adams added that police will work with rural communities, farmers and other stakeholders to strengthen crime-prevention measures and ensure that those responsible for violent crimes are brought to justice.
He also urged the community to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities to the police.
Adams further appealed to the community to work with law enforcement to enhance safety in farming areas.
