3 suspected CIT robbers killed in shoot-out with police on N12

An undercover law enforcement operation ended in the arrest of two robbers in the Johannesburg CBD and the recovery of two AK-47 rifles.

Three suspected cash-in-transit (CIT) robbers have been shot and killed during a shoot-out with police on the N12 near Mondeor yesterday (October 9), reports Southern Courier.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the incident happened in the afternoon, after law enforcement officers followed up on crime intelligence about a group of suspects allegedly planning to commit a robbery in Roodepoort.

According to Nevhuhulwi, the team was tracking two vehicles linked to the suspected robbery when officers spotted a white Mercedes-Benz on Kliprivier Road.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle as it approached traffic lights, but the suspects allegedly opened fire on officers, who retaliated.

During the exchange of gunfire, the Mercedes-Benz lost control and collided with two civilian vehicles on the N12.

Three civilians were injured in the collision and transported to hospital for medical treatment.

All three suspects inside the Mercedes-Benz were certified dead at the scene, Nevhuhulwi said.

Police recovered two AK-47 rifles, several rounds of ammunition and magazines from the vehicle.

In a related development, officers traced the second vehicle, a white Audi, to the Johannesburg CBD, where two suspects were arrested.
