Police have opened an inquest after the body of a woman was recovered with open wounds on a beach in KuGompo.

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has closed two beaches after a woman was killed in a shark attack today (October 20).

Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, spokesperson for the Eastern Cape SAPS, said officers arrived at Orient Beach in KuGompo (formerly East London) at 07:00.

Mawisa said that on arrival, officers discovered the body of a 65-year-old woman with open wounds.

She added that KuGompo Police Station opened an inquest for further investigation.

Beach closures

Following the incident, the municipality closed Orient Beach and Eastern Beach.

In a post on Facebook, the municipality confirmed a shark attack caused the fatality.

“Beachgoers are urged to exercise extreme caution and to refrain from entering the water at the affected beaches.”

The municipality is also issuing warnings at other local beaches.

“Members of the public are requested to remain vigilant, adhere to all safety advisories and comply with instructions issued by the relevant authorities,” added the municipality.
