KZN teen jumps to his death from hospital window

A teenager died after jumping out of a second-floor window at Port Shepstone Regional Hospital in KwaZulu-Natal on Tuesday.

According to the police, 14-year-old Sphephelo Sosibo was admitted to the hospital and placed in ICU on Christmas Eve following a car accident, South Coast Herald reported.

According to the hospital’s chief executive officer, Bigboy Khawula, Sosibo was transferred to another ward last week after showing signs of improvement.

Khawula added the boy was restrained a day later after trying to leave the ward, showing signs of confusion

According to police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, a hospital employee allegedly saw the child sitting near the window.

“When she tried to approach him, he jumped, sustaining serious injuries and died within minutes,” Wiid said.

Khawula denied any negligence on the hospital’s part, and an investigation would be launched to figure out how the teen managed to untie himself.

In similar incident, a 68-year-old patient committed suicide at Netcare Unitas Hospital in Centurion, near Pretoria, last November.

The man reportedly jumped from a staircase on the second floor of the hospital.

A staff member of the hospital reportedly tried to stop the man, but he jumped nonetheless, nearly dragging her down with him.
