Woman raped while illegally crossing border

A 23-year-old woman was allegedly raped by an unknown man at the Esicancweni Mananga border post to Swaziland, near Tonga, in Mpumalanga.

According to Tonga police spokesperson Lieutenant Mzwandile Nyambi, the woman said she had been on her way to Swaziland with her daughter on Friday and did not have a passport to cross the border, Mpumalanga News reported.

“She apparently attempted to jump the fence and was approached by an unknown African male who told her that he was a soldier. The suspect demanded an amount of R150 in cash for her to cross the border,” Nyambi said.

The suspect allegedly threatened the woman with a knife and ordered her to breastfeed her crying baby.

“The suspect then raped her and fled the scene on foot,” Nyambi added.

The matter is still under investigation, and the victim is undergoing counselling at a local hospital.

Earlier this month, a woman was allegedly dragged into a bush and raped by two suspects while walking with her boyfriend in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga. The couple were reportedly on their way back home when two suspects attacked and overpowered them before forcefully dragging the woman into a nearby bush.

Police and other security officials later arrived at the scene and found the 29-year-old woman after a short search, after which she was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No arrests were made.
