Explosives found at Durban shopping centre
Undetonated explosive devices have been found at the Sunningdale Shopping Centre in Durban this morning, KwaZulu-Natal.
It is believed criminals were targeting the Spar at the popular shopping centre, Northglen Newsreported.
It is alleged a security company responding to alarm activation found criminals had broken into the Spar.
The suspects had ripped the alarm out and the security personnel found a number of undetonated explosives on the safe inside the store, said police. It is believed the suspects may have been interrupted, or the explosives did not work, but they fled the scene.
Sunningdale Spar remains cordoned off after police, and the bomb disposal squad and forensics are on the scene. The latest from a police source is that the explosives are of a “liquid kind”. Spar remains closed while other shops at the centre are operating as normal.
“We believe the suspects may be linked to a series of bombings around Durban. The bomb squad is on scene,” said police. Investigations are ongoing.
Last month, two men allegedly found in possession of explosives were arrested in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. The pair drew the attention of the police after they were seen driving a vehicle with broken canopy windows, said Lieutenant-Colonel Andre Traut.
“Immediate instinct led to an observation of the suspects, which later resulted in them being pulled over and apprehended,” said Traut. “Their vehicle was searched, and six explosive sticks, five detonators and a signal jamming device were found in their possession.”
