VIDEO: Alleged vandal suffers severe burn wounds

More information has come to light after video footage of a man who suffered severe burns while allegedly stealing copper cables spread on social media.

The footage was recorded by a community member in Lynnville, Witbank, who saw the man running out of a substation on March 12, Witbank News reported.

Community members who live near the substation had heard an explosion and went to investigate after a power outage. The man was said to have suffered severe burns all over his torso, arms and face. The skin was left hanging off his body, and some of his hair also burned off.

Members of the community shouted at the man, saying: “What were you doing? You brought this on yourself; what were you doing in the substation?”

The burnt victim shouted back in pain: “I am burning, I am dying, and it is so painful, please get an ambulance!”

Residents told the man to walk to the nearby clinic for help, where he was believed to have been arrested.

The municipality later managed to restore power to Lynnville and parts of Ackerville, which were without power for about six hours on the day.
