Shots fired as armed men storm Hyde Park Mall

Four armed suspects are at large after a robbery at a cellphone shop in Hyde Park Corner shopping centre, in the north of Johannesburg this afternoon.

“The suspects entered the Vodacom shop and pointed firearms at the cashiers. They then stole cellphones,” police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela told The Citizen.

Makhubela said the armed suspects robbed the store of cellphones worth about R1.5 million and added shots were fired into the air as they fled the scene.

No injuries were reported, and the suspects are still at large, while police were still on the scene investigating by late Thursday afternoon.

In February, armed robbers stormed an MTN shop inside the WesBank building on Beyers Naude Drive in the north of Johannesburg.

Speaking to The Citizen, an eyewitness said the suspects entered the building and opened fire. One person was injured after being hit on the head with a gun. The suspects got away with three bags containing cellphone, and were chased by police who arrested four suspects.
