Pupil, 14, stabbed to death in alleged ‘gang war’

A 14-year-old pupil has been stabbed to death in an alleged “gang war” after a dispute between two groups in Zakarriya Park, Lenasia, in Johannesburg.

It is alleged a group of teenagers, believed to be from Vlakfontein, approached another group of teenagers who were sitting at the park after a soccer match on Sunday. It is alleged a dispute erupted between these groups, Rising Sun Lenasia reported.

Realising the fight going on between the groups, community members called police, who then stopped the brawl and drove off. About an hour later, it is alleged the fight broke out again. During the fight, one of the Vlakfontein members allegedly stabbed the deceased in the neck.

An anonymous source said community members tried to attack the suspect, but police quickly responded to the scene and arrested the suspect. The Zakariyya Park Combined School has arranged trauma counselling for those who were affected, as both the suspect and the deceased were from the same school. The CPF also plans to put an end to gangsterism in schools, said CPF chairperson of Lenasia South Meshack Tebe.

The suspect has appeared in the Protea Magistrates’ Court today.

In a separate incident, three men were shot and injured in an alleged gang-related shooting incident on Hannaford Drive in Phoenix, Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal. The relative of one of the victims said two men had come into a pawnbroker store and asked for an individual named “Calvin”.

“Despite having not located ‘Calvin,’ the men opened fire anyway, hitting three men in the stomach, leg and chest,” said the relative. It is believed the suspects then went back into their car and drove off.
