Nquthu Mayor, SM Kunene and members of the Council have sent their condolences to the Ndlovu family of Ward 11.

The Nquthu protests have claimed their first life. The young man, who was shot in the stomach on Monday during the protest action outside the Nquthu Municipality – which was broken up by the SAPS’ Public Order Policing (POP) Unit, has died, Northern Natal Courier reports.

The deceased, identified only as Ndlovu, was taken to the CJM Hospital in Nquthu, and later rushed to a hospital in Newcastle, where he was reported to have succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

Protesters had vowed to burn down the municipal building, following a day of rioting which saw cars stoned, tyres burned and roads blocked. Vendors’ stalls were also looted.

Nquthu Mayor, SM Kunene and members of the Council have sent their condolences to the Ndlovu family, which residents in the Vulamehlo area of Ward 11.

“Three other protesters and two policemen were reported to have injured during the chaos. SAPS made three arrests related to public violence and malicious damage to property, estimated at over R10 000, ” said municipal spokesperson, Siyabonga Shoba.

The protests centred around service delivery issues, with reportedly poor road infrastructure top of the agenda. A memorandum outlining these grievances was handed over to the Mayor.

“Mayor Kunene has reassured all residents that the Council is engaging all stakeholders to find remedial actions to the situation. He encouraged citizens to use proper communication channels [rather] than embarking on vicious activities, which does not help anyone but fuels deranged situations which can be resolved by proper engagement.”

A representative from the Department of Transport was also present, to provide an overview of plans to upgrade road networks in the area.
