Bail for hijacking syndicate suspects
Six suspects allegedly operating a syndicate that specialises in hijacking and stealing Volkswagen Polos in Gauteng have been granted R1000 bail each at the Tembisa Magistrates` Court.
Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago said one of the suspects was arrested, and during questioning, he led officers to the other five suspects who were also arrested last Tuesday, Tembisan reported.
“Four VW Polos and one VW Golf 1 were recovered. The suspects were arrested by members of the EMPD Housebreaking Unit. Two of the six suspects are from Soweto. Their four accomplices are residents of Tembisa,” added Kgasago.
“The suspects, aged between 23 to 28 years, were charged for possession of stolen motor vehicles. They are expected to appear in the Tembisa Magistrates’ Court soon.” he said.
In a separate incident, five suspects were arrested for allegedly hijacking a courier truck in Olifantsfontein, Gauteng.
Police provincial spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the suspects were arrested at 1pm after a high-speed chase between the suspects, police and the Ekurhuleni metro police.
“It is alleged the truck was cornered by about four vehicles, a white Golf 7, white Ford ST and a BMW 1 Series and was subsequently hijacked,” added Mogale.
She said a high-speed chase ensued on the N3 South before the Golf 7 took the Marlboro off-ramp with three of the suspects inside. Police gave chase until they reached a construction site, where the three suspects were finally arrested. Two sustained injuries during a shootout with police.
