UPDATE: Doppio Zero roach drama continues

Investigations into the alleged sighting of beetles at the popular eatery, Doppio Zero, in Sandton City, Johannesburg, have revealed the critters were in fact cockroaches.

It is alleged the restaurant chain investigated the matter by hiring ECO LAB, a pest-control company, to do an official investigation, City Buzz reported reported.

The complainant, Roselyn Seodi, allegedly discovered insects on her table at the popular eatery and claimed her boyfriend spilled some of the milkshake she was drinking when at least five insects crawled out from the middle of the table.

“We at Doppio Zero would like to acknowledge that we were, in fact, incorrect regarding our initial findings – the insect found at our restaurant is a very rare species of vegetative cockroach. This insect originates in plant material and is not an internal pest,” said Tarryn Leigh Nash, marketing coordinator for the chain.

“We enlisted the help of two reputable companies to assist us in our findings and have since followed all procedures pertaining to the attached report. We have also ensured that going forward our Pest Control efforts will be even more vigilant. We have obtained these extra reports based on the fact that we want to go above and beyond to ensure we exceed industry standards with regards to health and hygiene,” added Nash.

Some of the findings in the report include: “Ground-level dining area, kitchen, storerooms and preparation areas presented no evidence of insects.

“Upper deck bar/dining area presented evidence of light infestation of dead Red Headed Vegetative Cockroaches behind pot plants close to window area. These species of cockroaches are rarely found indoors and may easily be confused with a garden variety beetle. They are invertebrates and tend to occupy outdoor garden areas close to leaf matter and pose no threat to humans.

“It was strange to have been found in the dining area. However after further inspection, it was revealed that penetration occurred to structural vulnerability to restaurant.”
