3.1 magnitude earth tremor hits parts of Durban
A 3.1 magnitude quake was felt throughout KwaZulu-Natal and parts of Durban in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A seismologist working for the Council of Geoscience in Pretoria, Martin Brandt, said: “Our systems picked it up at 5.21am on June 16, at a magnitude of 3.1. It originated just outside Gingindlovu,”Zululand Observer reported.
He said the information was only preliminary confirmation and more detailed analysis of the data would be required to give an exact reading.
Last August, what was understood to be a widely-felt earth tremor, was felt by residents across Gauteng and possibly neighbouring provinces.
The tremor was experienced throughout Gauteng as well as reports coming through from the North-West. Residents across Pretoria and Johannesburg felt the movement, some calling it strong, equating it to an earthquake.
The Council for Geoscience could not give an indication of what the cause was or how widespread it was as they were still in the process of gathering the data and analysing it.
