Toddler, 2, and mother killed while crossing road

A woman and her two-year-old child were killed after being hit by a vehicle as they tried crossing a busy intersection in Ruimsig, Roodepoort, on the West Rand.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics at the scene on Wednesday found the two lifeless bodies in the middle of the road and the vehicle a few metres away, Krugersdorp Newsreported.

“On assessment, paramedics discovered that both the mother and child had sustained fatal injuries in the collision. Unfortunately nothing more could be done for the patients, and they were declared dead at the scene,” added Meiring.

The driver of the vehicle fortunately did not sustain any injuries.

“It is understood that the driver of the vehicle failed to notice the pedestrians crossing the road. Local authorities were on scene for further investigations,” he said.

In a separate incident, a child believed to be aged between six and nine years was killed after he was hit by a light motor vehicle on the R21, near Johannesburg, last month.

ER24 Emergency services spokesperson Russel Meiring said the accident occurred on the R21 in Olifantsfontein, near Midrand. Paramedics from the ER24 Johannesburg Central branch arrived on scene and found the boy lying in the middle aisle between the two roads.

Meiring said the paramedics found that the child had already succumbed to his multiple injuries and that nothing more could be done for him, and he was declared dead at the accident scene. The driver of the light motor vehicle escaped without injury.
