Alleged ‘satanic’ serial rapist arrested

A man alleged to be a ‘satanic’ rapist who has claimed five known victims in the Empangeni area, KwaZulu-Natal, has been arrested.

The 29-year-old man, along with two accomplices, was arrested on Thursday morning in the eNseleni area, Spokesperson for Empangeni police, Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose, said. According to Mdlalose, a joint operation by the Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit and Crime Intelligence culminated in the arrests, Zululand Observer reported.

The modus operandi employed by the man reportedly involved phoning unsuspecting women and offering employment. He would then set up a meeting during which the women were led to a nearby sugarcane field or bushes where he allegedly assaulted and raped them.

According to Mdlalose, the alleged rapist then told the women he is a satanist and that if the attack is reported to police, he will kill them by “satanic spirit”.

It is believed the suspect will appear in court on Monday.

In February, Simon Sithole, a serial rapist from Mamelodi, was sentenced in the Pretoria High Court to 564 years’ imprisonment, of which he effectively has to serve 78 years.

The 27-year-old Mozambican national had waged a reign of terror for years in the Pretoria East township before his arrest. Sithole’s 21 victims include an 11-year-old child and three 16-year-old girls. Sithole used a range of weapons, including a firearm, knife, axe, screwdriver and garden shears to threaten his victims.
