Durban woman injured in N2 rock attack

A policewoman escaped serious injuries after a rock was hurled at her car from the Hull Road bridge on the southbound lane of the N2 in Durban on Thursday.

The victim, Susan Louw, who lives in Parker Lane, Warner Beach, was on her way home from Pinetown police station, where she works, when the rock was thrown onto her car at about 5am,South Coast Sun reported.

The large rock lodged in the windscreen and dashboard of the driver’s side of Louw’s Hyundai i20. Shards of broken glass scattered in the front section. Louw reportedly sustained injuries to her sternum and neck when she was pushed forward after the impact.

“I was in the extreme right hand lane. All of a sudden, I heard a loud bang and swerved into the left lane and managed to keep my car under control,” she said.

As there are no lights on the Hull Road bridge, Louw was unaware at the time that a rock had been thrown at her car.

“When I heard the loud bang, I thought something was wrong with the engine. Instinct kicked in. Being in the police for 27 years I did not stop, I drove straight home,” added Louw. She said she was shocked and shaken when she saw the rock wedged in her car.

Last month, a woman was struck on the head by a brick while travelling along the N12 in Alberton.

A man who was standing on the side of the N12 westbound, just before The Glen Shopping Centre, appeared to be aiming for vehicles travelling on the road in what seemed to be a senseless attack.

Darrel Badenhorst, who was driving the vehicle, described the suspect as slightly older and thin. “The attacker threw a brick, and it hit Marionette on the left side of her head. Marionette was sitting on the passenger side of the vehicle,” he said.
