Celebrating 60 years of Mini Cooper: Mini 6 000 Expedition takes the iconic car to new heights

Join Ben Coombs as he explores the highs and lows of the Mini 6 000 Expedition in South America.

As the Mini Cooper marks its 60th anniversary, Ben Coombs, the intrepid road tripper, launches the Mini 6 000 Expedition. This monumental journey elevates the iconic car to unprecedented heights – 6 000m above sea level, to be precise.

With a rich history of long-distance driving adventures in unconventional vehicles, Coombs is no stranger to the road. Having crossed Africa in a Porsche and traversed the Americas in a TVR, he now explores a new metric height, aiming for 6 000m with the Mini in South America.

The chosen Mini for this expedition is a 1974 Mini 1 000, specially modified for overlanding, featuring a bespoke roof tent. Accompanying the Mini on its South American odyssey is a 1990 Range Rover, forming a dynamic duo of iconic British classics. Both cars embarked on their journey from the UK in mid-October and are now poised to conquer the Andes.

With 17 years of overlanding experience, Coombs is joined by Fraser Pestana, Darren Weeks and Aglaia Wieland on this South American adventure. The Mini 6 000 Expedition enjoys support from classic motoring enthusiasts, including Classicline Insurance, Somerford Mini and Coombs’ road tripping venture, Pub2Pub Adventures.

In the spirit of celebration, ‘Mini6000’, an English-style IPA, is brewed both in the UK by Bulletproof Brewing and in the US by Motosonora Brewing. The Mini, equipped with a beer tap, aims to pull ‘the world’s highest pint’ at the targeted 6 000m summit.

Detour Roadtrips, the online hub for road trip enthusiasts, proudly serves as the exclusive media partner for this extraordinary expedition.
