From first dates to family trips – cars for every chapter of love

Explore the best used cars for every stage of your love life, from affordable hatchbacks to spacious family cars and luxury SUVs.

It is Valentine’s Day and while many are planning first dates or romantic getaways, some couples are deciding what the next car parked in their garage should be. Using the latest AutoTrader data, here is a list of vehicles perfect for different couples, whether just starting a life together, needing something bigger for the family, or requiring something safe and dependable for their golden years.

The newlywed couple

When starting a new life together, newlyweds tend to watch their finances closely. Whether saving for a house or planning for a family, one of the best ways to keep costs down is by purchasing an affordable and fuel-efficient hatchback. The Toyota Starlet stands out as a sensible buy, and by going used, young couples can save even more cash. The Starlet represents excellent value with an average price of R239 595 on the used car market. Moreover, the 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine returns remarkable fuel economy, with a claimed 5.4L/100km fuel-use figure. A generously-sized backseat and 314-litre boot are perfect for couples looking to expand their family.

The Suzuki Swift is another compelling alternative. While smaller than the Starlet, it offers even more savings, thanks to its claimed fuel consumption of 4.9L/100km and an even lower average price of R201 638 on the used car market.

The growing couple

Those looking to expand their family with kids (and a dog, perhaps?) may consider trading their compact hatchback for something more versatile. There are plenty of great options on the used car market, like the Cherry Tiggo 8 Pro. At an average used price of R532 202, the Tiggo 8 Pro seems pricey, but its average mileage of 14 777km and average registration age of two years mean buyers can get into a nearly new car for a reasonable price.

The Tiggo 8 Pro is very practical. It can accommodate seven occupants, and when the rear-most seats are not in use, it has 739L of boot space. Fold the second row down, and there is 1 930L of packing room. The Chinese SUV boasts a myriad of safety features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist.

The Volkswagen Tiguan is also popular with young families and offers the quality and solidity associated with the German brand. At an average used price of R484 106, the Tiguan is cheaper than the Tiggo 8, but it is worth noting that the Tiguan has a higher average mileage (69 272km) and registration age (five years).

The adventure couple

There’s always that adventure couple. These thrill seekers prefer mountain biking to breakfast in bed and surfing to a spa day. Therefore, they require a vehicle that reflects their rugged personas, ready to take on the roughest terrain without sweat.

The Suzuki Jimny is one of the most affordable off-roaders with an average price of R365 520 on the used car market. Furthermore, it has a proven reliability record, and those retro looks are very appealing. While it is not the most comfortable vehicle on-road, the Jimny has all the amenities of a modern car, with the base GL trim receiving air-conditioning, dual front airbags, stability control, and more. With an average mileage and registration age of 29 790km and three years, adventurous couples can pick up a lightly used model for a great price.

Those willing to spend more can consider the Jeep Wrangler, which, with an average used price of R667 676, is double for what a used Jimny retails. It does boast superior road refinement, and the available 209kW 3.6-litre V6 is more powerful than the Jimny’s75 kW 1.5-litre four-cylinder.

The power couple

For the career-oriented couple focused on climbing the corporate ladder, there is an endless array of desirable luxury cars on the used car market. The BMW X4, for example, is beloved by style-conscious corporate types who want to stand out from the crowd. Thanks to its sloping coupe-esque roofline, it cuts a sportier figure than a regular SUV but still has the ride comfort and most of the practicality.

There are multiple engines to choose from, such as a turbodiesel four-cylinder that produces 140kW and 400Nm of torque. While that is the most popular choice, performance-oriented drivers will lust after the M40i or X4M Competition, the latter of which produces 375kW and 650Nm of torque. With an average price of R814 958, the X4 represents reasonable value for the luxury crossover class.

Those looking for even more luxury and space can opt for the BMW X5, the consummate luxury SUV. With a supple ride quality, fine interior materials, and enough room for VIPs to lounge about in, the X5 will keep all but the pickiest executives happy. Of course, this comes at a price: The average used retail value of the X5 is R1 168 721 despite an average mileage of 71 262km.

The golden years couple

More senior lovebirds may want to consider getting a practical and sensible sedan that’s light on fuel, easy to maintain, and has enough space for grandkids and hobbies. The Toyota Corolla Quest fulfills this brief nicely, with an average price tag of R236 625 on the used car market. While the average mileage of 61 345km and registration age of five years may concern some buyers, the Corolla has cultivated a reputation for durability and reliability.

Even if something goes wrong, Corollas are inexpensive to maintain. Since the arrival of the second-generation Quest, all models are powered by a 1.8-litre engine that produces 103kW and 173Nm of torque. Fuel economy is exceptional, with a claimed 7.0L/100 km for the manual and 6.4L/100 km for the CVT variant.

Those looking for something more affordable can opt for the smaller Nissan Almera, which retails for an average of R177 943 on the used car market, with lower average mileages of 55 268km.
