Your six-step guide to introducing your children to a new cat

Whether it’s your first family cat or a new addition, a few simple ground rules can make welcoming a new fur baby a calm, happy experience for everyone.

Bringing a new cat home is exciting, but little hands and big emotions need guidance and patience.

While it’s tempting to want to cuddle and play with the new furry friend constantly, it is important not to overwhelm them and to give them time and space to get used to their new environment.

Try these guidelines to get help with the process:

  1. Calm Introductions: Encourage children to sit on the floor and allow the kitten or cat to approach them first. This gives the pet a sense of control and helps them feel more comfortable.
  2. Proper Handling: Teach children how to handle the new pet with care and respect. Demonstrate the correct way to pick up a kitten (supporting their tummy and rear). Supervise young children when they hold the kitten.
  3. Gentle Cuddles: When cuddling, emphasize the importance of gentle hugs and explain that squeezing too tightly can hurt the cat or kitten.
  4. No Rough Play: Make it clear that pulling the tail, holding the cat by the head or neck, and other forms of rough handling are never okay and can hurt their new friend. Also explain that even during fun play, scratches might happen by accident and it’s something to be aware of. Tip: Encourage children to play with the cat or kitten using toys.
  5. Respecting Boundaries: Teach children to recognize when the cat or kitten wants to be left alone. Explain that disturbing them while eating, sleeping, or using the litter box is not respectful and may cause unwanted behaviors like hissing, swatting, scratching, or biting. Kittens, especially, need plenty of undisturbed sleep to grow and develop a strong immune system.
  6. Quiet Time: Explain that loud noises and boisterous behavior can stress a new kitten. Encourage children to be calm and gentle around the new arrival.
