Toyota tops pre-owned sales in June while Ford Ranger leads models
Data from AutoTrader reveals four Toyota vehicles placed among South Africa's 10 overall best-selling used cars.
Toyota is successfully replicating its new-car market dominance within the pre-owned space, solidifying its status as South Africa’s most sought-after brand among used vehicle buyers, reports The Citizen.
According to the latest sales data from AutoTrader, Toyota moved 5 352 units during June. This volume places the manufacturer significantly ahead of Volkswagen, which recorded 4 100 sales, and Ford, which accounted for 3 107 units.
Toyota secures four spots in top 10
The brand’s market strength was further underscored by model rankings, with four of the 10 best-selling used vehicles in June wearing the Toyota badge.
Mirroring the trends seen in new car sales, the Hilux remained the brand’s volume leader. While the Ford Ranger claimed the top spot as the best-selling used vehicle in June with 1 823 units, the Toyota Hilux followed closely in second place with 1 410 sales.
The Volkswagen Polo Vivo rounded out the top three with 1 110 units, followed by the Polo (1 091) and the Suzuki Swift (758).
The Toyota Fortuner ranked sixth with 707 sales, while the Hyundai Grand i10 secured seventh place (589). The Corolla Cross (583) took eighth, the Isuzu D-Max (522) ninth, and the Toyota Starlet (502) completed the top 10.
Hilux derivatives fuel buyer demand
Toyota’s influence extended into the variant rankings, where two Hilux derivatives featured among June’s five most popular used options. The Hilux 2.8 GD-6 took third place overall with 595 sales, while the Hilux 2.4 GD-6 ranked fifth with 491 units. Combined, these two derivatives generated 1 086 sales, accounting for roughly one-fifth of Toyota’s total monthly volume.
Broader data indicates that Toyota’s lead is not limited to its bakkie range. The Fortuner maintains the brand’s competitive edge in the large SUV market, while the Corolla Cross and Starlet provide consistent volume across the crossover and hatchback segments.
