From the dominant Chery Tiggo 4 to the stylish Suzuki Fronx, find out which five budget-friendly compact SUVs South Africans bought the most last month.

In a budget-conscious market such as South Africa, the sub-R300k segment is booming, especially vehicles falling into the value-oriented crossover/SUV category. So, if you are in the market for a vehicle of this ilk and wondering which was the most popular in March 2026, CAR Mag has taken a closer look at the latest naamsa sales stats to bring you the five best-selling compact SUVs priced from under R300 000 in SA in the third month of the year.

5. Nissan Magnite – 953 units

The fifth best-selling compact SUV in SA in March 2026 comes in the shape of the Nissan Magnite, which is priced from R252 200. The Magnite, which scored an upgraded safety rating in 2025, is available with the choice of two powertrain options: A 53kW/96Nm 1.0-litre, three-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol and a 74kW/160Nm turbo-triple of similar capacity. The former unit can be had with either a five-speed manual or automated manual transmission with a similar number of cogs, while the turbocharged engine is available with the former gearbox and a continuously variable transmission (CVT).

4. Kia Sonet – 958 units

CAR Mag‘s 2026 Top 12 Best Buys awards winner in the ‘Budget crossover’ category, the passenger-focused Kia Sonet is priced from R299 995 (the commercial-oriented panel van derivative is priced from R294 995). The least expensive Sonet employs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine producing 85kW and 144Nm of torque. The atmospheric powertrain is available with the choice of two transmission options: Six-speed manual and CVT. A 1.0-litre turbo-triple developing 88kW and 172Nm, and coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox, is also available, though the sole model employing this powertrain will set you back R436 995.

3. Mahindra XUV 3XO – 1 056 units

One of the 10 best-selling passenger cars in SA in March 2026, the Mahindra XUV 3XO, which featured in CAR Mag‘s 2025 SUV Shootout, is priced from R259 999. All models are equipped with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine producing 82kW and 200Nm of torque. Transmission options include a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic.

2. Suzuki Fronx – 1 179 units

Priced from a hair below R300 000 (R299 900, to be specific), the Fronx exclusively employs Suzuki’s familiar K15B powertrain, paired with either a four-speed automatic transmission or five-speed manual cog-swapper. As a reminder, the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol unit produces 77kW and 138Nm.

Priced from R269 900, a total number of 1 888 Tiggo 4 Pro/Cross units found new homes in March 2026; earning it a second-place finish among the best-selling passenger cars in SA in March 2026, while claiming the top spot among the five best-selling Chinese passenger cars in SA in the third month of the year. The Tiggo 4 Pro/Cross accounted for nearly 79% of Chery’s local March 2026 sales. This Chinese automaker also topped the list of best-selling Chinese car brands in SA in March 2026.
