Coming to SA: Chery Tiggo V SUV revealed

Capable of ‘transforming’ from a seven-seater SUV to a bakkie, here’s what is known about a Chinese automaker's ‘transformable’ model.

In October 2025, CAR Mag attended Chery’s International User Summit in Wuhu, China, where the Chinese automaker unveiled the T1TP ‘transformable’ SUV/bakkie concept. However, at the time, the series-production version of the design study had yet to be confirmed for South Africa. Well, now, we can confirm that it is, indeed, destined for our market.

Dubbed the Tiggo V, little information surrounding the production model, which ‘transforms’ from an SUV to a double-cab bakkie has been released. However, at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, where it was revealed on Friday, the Wuhu-based brand did reveal a few key details of the Tiggo V.

In SUV format, the Tiggo V offers up to seven seats, with the height of the interior measuring 1 297mm. The wheelbase spans 2 800mm. The Tiggo V sports a 220mm ground clearance. In the presentation, the company also revealed that petrol-only (ICE) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrains will be available – models employing the former and latter offering water-fording depths of 650 and 700mm, respectively. Although revealing the claimed fuel consumption of the ICE and PHEV – 7.84 and 6.0L/100 km, respectively – the firm has yet to share more information regarding the powertrain setups.

Chery Tiggo V SA launch date

Chery has confirmed the Tiggo V will launch in SA in the fourth quarter of 2026. Local pricing and specifications will likely be revealed closer to this SUV/bakkie’s arrival in our market.

As a reminder, as CAR Mag noted in Every Chinese car confirmed for SA in 2026, the Tiggo V isn’t the only Chery product that will make its way to our shores this year – the latter including the KP31 bakkie and the Himla bakkie, which we sampled for a first drive in China in 2025.
