Toyota turns up the heat on new Hilux

A host of sporty new add-ons have been unveiled for the upcoming Hilux, adding extra visual appeal and improved driving refinement.

The new Toyota Hilux is set to launch in South Africa towards the end of June.

While Toyota has stayed tight-lipped about the next Hilux GR-Sport, its Gazoo Racing (GR) division has rolled out a range of upgrades for the standard ninth-generation model, including both exterior styling tweaks and functional performance enhancements.

Exterior elements include a GR front grille, finished in gloss black; a gloss stainless steel GR muffler, measuring 100mm in diameter; and GR mudflaps, available in red or black. TRD also offers GR visors for the side windows.

The parts list further includes a GR door stabiliser. In addition to the above-mentioned items, TRD also offers a GR performance damper set, which the company says improves steering stability and driving comfort while reducing noise and vibration.

As a reminder, the new Hilux is based on Toyota’s innovative international multi-purpose vehicle architecture, the same platform underpinning the new Land Cruiser FJ, which CAR Mag sampled for a first drive in May. The ninth-generation Hilux was revealed with the Japanese automaker’s tried-and-trusted 2.8-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine – the latter available in ‘standard’ and 48V mild-hybrid formats.

The Hilux isn’t the only Toyota offered with a range of GR upgrades, however. Along with several other products from the Aichi-based brand, as CAR Mag reported in February, TRD also offers a slew of modifications, including GR front and rear spoilers and fresh 20-inch forged alloy wheels, for the new RAV4.
