Nissan Tekton: SA launch date confirmed for new compact SUV
South African compact-SUV buyers will soon have another option, with a newcomer expected to take on several established models in a fiercely competitive segment.
Nissan has announced when the Tekton will arrive in South Africa. Here’s when the Japanese automaker’s Renault Duster-based compact SUV will launch in our market.
Built on the same India-based production line as the new Duster, the Tekton is underpinned by the Renault-Nissan Alliance CMF-B platform. The Tekton’s bodywork is slightly larger than its Renault cousin’s; measuring 4 348 mm in length, 1 815 mm in width, and 1 674 mm in height. (The Duster measures 4 343 mm long, 1 813 mm wide, and 1 656 mm tall.)
Nissan has yet to reveal local engine options. However, a fair bet would be that the Tekton will be available with the same units employed by the new Duster lineup. The latter can be had with the choice of two three-cylinder turbocharged petrol powertrains: 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre. Exclusively available with a six-speed manual, the former produces 74 kW and 160 N.m of torque. The 1.3-litre is endowed with a healthier 116 kW and 260 N.m, delivered to the front wheels via either a six-speed manual or six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Revealed in July, Nissan has said the Tekton will make its SA premiere in September. The local model lineup and pricing thereof have yet to be released. However, we’d hazard a guess that the Tekton will be priced closely to the new Duster. As a reminder, the new Duster is priced from R339 999 to R499 999.
In addition to the aforementioned Renault product, the Tekton will go up against an array of rivals when it lands here. To name but a few, in the ever-competitive compact-SUV segment, the Tekton will compete against the new Kia Seltos, which we sampled in 1.5 T-GDi format at is local launch in Cape Town, Toyota Corolla Cross, Hyundai Creta, Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, and Haval Jolion.
