6 decades of Corolla: Toyota adds exclusive hybrid hatchback
Pearl white paint, a contrasting black roof and upgraded digital displays feature on South Africa's newest high-spec Corolla XR model.
A celebratory edition of the Corolla Hatch has joined Toyota’s local range, offering distinct visual upgrades alongside the brand’s 103kW 1.8-litre petrol-electric powertrain. The model retains standard XR features, including adaptive cruise control and an eight-year battery warranty.
Starting with the exterior, the Corolla Hatch 60th Anniversary edition’s bodywork is finished in Platinum White Pearl with a contrasting black roof. ’60th Anniversary’ badging is fitted inside and out.
In January, Toyota’s local arm announced it had streamlined its Corolla Hatch and Sedan lineups to include only high-spec XR hybrid models. As such, in addition to the special-edition elements, the model features a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charging dock, a six-speaker audio system, and dual-zone climate control.
Further included with XR trim are a reverse-view camera, supplemented by fore and aft park distance sensors, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert. The Corolla Hatch is equipped with seven airbags and features Isofix child-seat mounting points.

Locally, pricing for the Corolla lineup kicks off at R590 200 for the Sedan, with the Hatch priced from R601 100. The 60th Anniversary demands a R17 800 premium over the standard Hatch, bringing its price to R618 900. Included as standard are a six-service/90 000km service plan, a three-year/100 000km vehicle warranty, and a battery warranty spanning eight years or 195 000km.

A single powertrain option is employed across both the Hatch and Sedan lineups. The hybrid setup comprises a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine and a single electric motor. Total output reaches 103kW, delivered to the front wheels via a CVT. The Japanese automaker claims an average fuel consumption of 4.0l/100km, which translates to a driving range of 1 075km from a 43-litre tank.
