Shingwedzi Rest Camp_ A hidden gem in the northern reaches of the Kruger

Rest camps are a popular choice for a safari getaway because they offer a wide selection of accommodation.

The Kruger National Park is recognized internationally as one of the best places in Africa to experience an authentic safari adventure. Spanning over two million hectares, The Kruger is split into four distinct regions, boasting abundant wildlife and a wide range of accommodation options.

For those travellers who don’t have the budget for a private luxury lodge will look at the self-catering rest camps positioned within the park. Besides their location, rest camps are a popular choice for a safari getaway because they offer a wide selection of accommodation options and the flexibility to self drive or book guided activities.

Because these camps are well-positioned and more affordable, they do tend to book out quickly over the peak periods of the year. Camps in the southern-most region of the park are generally the most popular because they are the closest to gates that are easily accessed from Malelane, White River, and Hazyview. Camps in this region can feel a little more crowded during the busy months, so if you are looking for a quieter safari experience then you should consider travelling outside of the peak periods or alternatively look to travel just that little bit further and stay at Shingwedzi Rest Camp in the northern reaches of the Kruger. Fewer people travel to this region, making it the perfect place for a more private experience.

Shingwedzi Rest Camp is set on the banks of the Shingwedzi River, offering gorgeous views and a choice of camping beneath the stars; or staying in a hut, bungalow, cottage or guesthouse.  The camp is well-equipped with a restaurant, cafeteria, grocery shop, laundromat, petrol station, swimming pool, cutlery and plates hamper, and a picnic area.

With the camp positioned further north, safari experiences are generally more private with guided bush walks and game drives seeking out the famous Big Five and other animal species. The area around Shingwedzi offers frequent sightings of waterbuck, nyala, kudu and elephant who tend to congregate around the nearby dam. The birdlife is prolific with two nearby hides offering up-close viewing. There is also an adventure trail for guests eager to test their 4×4 driving skills.
