World Guacamole Day: A tribute to the beloved avocado dip

As World Guacamole Day reminds us, guacamole is more than just a dip - it’s a global sensation that brings people together.

Every year on 16 September, avocado lovers and food enthusiasts around the globe unite to celebrate World Guacamole Day. This day is dedicated to honouring this rich, creamy, dip that has transcended its humble origins to become a staple in kitchens and restaurants worldwide.

Guacamole traces its roots back to the ancient Aztecs in what is now modern-day Mexico. The Aztecs were the first to mash ripe avocados into a simple yet delicious spread, which they called ahuacamolli, a combination of the Nahuatl words for avocado (ahuacatl) and sauce (molli). This basic recipe has been passed down through centuries, evolving and adapting to suit various tastes and cultures.

What makes guacamole so universally loved? It’s the perfect blend of simplicity and versatility. Made primarily from mashed avocados, guacamole can be enhanced with ingredients like tomatoes, onions, cilantro, lime juice, and jalapeños, allowing for endless customisation.

You don’t need to be a master chef to enjoy World Guacamole Day. This recipe, compliments of The South African Avocado Growers’ Association, includes pomegranate and lime. It’s so easy to make and only requires a handful of ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 3 ripe avocados
  • 2 limes, juice and zest
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
  • 1 jalapeno pepper, seeds removed and finely diced (optional)
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • ½ cup pomegranate seeds

Method

  1. Peel and roughly chop the avocado.
  2. Mix the avo with the remaining ingredients, reserving half the pomegranate seeds for garnish.
  3. Garnish and serve immediately.
