Tyla bags 8 nominations at the Billboard Music Awards
Tyla’s eight Billboard Music Awards nominations have sparked mixed reactions – while fans are celebrating, others are questioning colourism and representation in Afrobeats categories.
Just when we thought we had said everything there is to say about arguably the biggest pop star to come out of South Africa, she goes and shows us that the sky is merely a pit stop, not the limit. Continuing to fly Mzansi’s flag high, Tyla has scored a total of eight nominations for the upcoming Billboard Music Awards (BMA).
As she continues to ride the wave of success from the deluxe edition of her self-titled debut album, it is safe to say Tyla is ‘suffering from success’, as the kids like to say. She recently released the highly anticipated music video for her smash hit Push 2 Start, one of the songs added in the deluxe edition.
Furthermore, this youngster recently bagged a partnership to release her custom-made ‘Tyger’ Stanley Cup, which has been making waves worldwide, with the young population eager to get their hands on one.
Tyla’s impressive work ethic and success have ensured that whenever major awards are set to take place, South Africans, along with Tyga’s fans worldwide, tune in to see how many nominations she will secure.
Set to air on December 12, the Billboard Music Awards have revealed their final list of nominations, and Tyla has stood out after bagging eight in total. These include Top R&B Artist, Top Afrobeats Artist, Top R&B Song, Top R&B Album, and Top R&B Female Artist.
The most impressive milestone, however, is that Tyla has made BMA history by securing three nominations in the same category.

As expected, Tyla’s fans have taken to social media to sing their favourite artist’s praises as she continues to prove doubters wrong. Many have vowed to do everything in their power to ensure the Water hit-maker walks away with the most awards on the night.

Conversely, the ‘Tyla hate train’ appears to be gaining momentum, as some have voiced their opposition to the South African superstar’s repeated inclusion in Afrobeats categories, particularly after her comments at the MTV Video Music Awards. Critics have attributed this to colourism, arguing that fellow Afrobeats artist Ayra Starr does not receive similar recognition as a dark-skinned woman.
Congratulations but they must fix the error she’s not doing afrobeats
