Celebrate International Waffle Day with a delicious homemade treat

One of the best things about waffles is their versatility, whether you keep it classic or get creative with toppings.

Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside – waffles are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert. International Waffle Day, celebrated on 25 March, is the perfect excuse to whip up a batch of these golden delights and get creative with toppings. Whether you love them sweet with syrup and berries or savoury with cheese and eggs, there’s a waffle for everyone! Making waffles from scratch is easier than you might think. All you need is a waffle maker and a handful of simple ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 250g plain flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 300ml whole milk
  • 100g unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)

Method

  1. Preheat the waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  3. In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix – some lumps are fine.
  5. Lightly grease the waffle maker with butter or oil, then pour in just enough batter to cover the plates.
  6. Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
