Mulled wine with orange and cinnamon

The cinnamon, star anise, and cloves create an aromatic blend that’s perfect for cold nights while fresh orange slices add a zesty lift.

There’s nothing quite like the comforting aroma of mulled wine filling the air. This warm, spiced drink has a long history of soothing winter chills, offering a cosy way to unwind after a brisk day. Mulled wine with orange and cinnamon combines the richness of red wine with the zesty brightness of fresh orange and the soothing spice of cinnamon. It’s the perfect choice for cold nights by the fire or relaxed winter gatherings.

Ingredients

  • 1 bottle (750ml) of red wine (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, or Shiraz)
  • 1 large orange, sliced (plus extra slices for garnish)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3-4 whole star anise (plus extra for garnish)
  • 5-6 whole cloves
  • 3 tablespoons of honey or brown sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 small piece of fresh ginger (optional, for extra warmth)
  • 100ml brandy (optional for an extra kick)

Method

  1.  In a large pot, gently warm the red wine over low heat. Do not let it boil, as this can burn off the alcohol and spoil the flavour.
  2. Stir in the orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise, cloves, and fresh ginger (if using).
  3. Allow the spices and citrus to gently infuse the wine for about 10-15 minutes.
  4. Stir in the honey or brown sugar, tasting as you go until the desired sweetness is reached.
  5. For a stronger mulled wine, add the brandy at this stage and stir well.
  6. Continue to gently simmer for another 10-15 minutes. Avoid bringing the mixture to a boil.
  7. Carefully ladle the mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs.
  8. Garnish each glass with a slice of fresh orange, a star anise, and a cinnamon stick.
