How to keep baby’s bum soft, healthy, and rash-free

Caring for your baby’s bottom is about more than just changing nappies, it’s about creating a routine that keeps skin clean, dry, and protected.

By adopting these six, easy habits, you can prevent discomfort, save you and baby stress, and keep that baby-soft skin exactly as it should be:

  1. Choose the right nappy. The right fit can make all the difference. Too-tight nappies can chafe, while overly loose ones may leak and keep skin damp. Consider hypoallergenic nappies if your baby’s skin is especially sensitive.
  2. Change nappies often. The simplest way to protect your baby’s skin is to keep it clean and dry. Check nappies frequently during the day and immediately change after a bowel movement. Night changes may be needed for newborns or if your baby is prone to rash.
  3. Be gentle when cleaning. Skip harsh wipes that contain alcohol or strong fragrances. Instead, choose water-based wipes or a soft cloth with warm water. Pat, don’t rub, the skin dry, as friction can aggravate irritation.
  4. Let the air in. Whenever possible, give your baby’s bottom a little “nappy-free time” to breathe. Just a few minutes of fresh air each day can help reduce moisture build-up and speed up healing if redness appears.
  5. Keep an eye out for rashes. If you spot redness, bumps, or swelling that doesn’t improve within a few days of at-home care, or if the rash looks severe check in with your healthcare provider. Some rashes may be caused by yeast or bacteria and need specific treatment.
  6. Use a barrier cream. A thin layer of barrier cream or ointment creates a protective shield between your baby’s skin and any moisture. Look for products that include zinc which is effective at locking out wetness while soothing the skin. One of our fave’s is Purity & Elizabeth Anne’s trusted Everyday Bum Cream, enriched with zinc-oxide, free from colourants and parabens, and soothes and protects your baby’s bottom while helping to prevent nappy rashes. It is also dermatologist and paediatrician approved.
