After dinner red wine hot chocolate

This rich red wine hot chocolate blends dark cocoa with smooth red wine to create a velvety, gently spiced drink.

If you enjoy dark chocolate and a good glass of red, this is where they meet. Red wine hot chocolate is smooth, slightly spiced and layered in flavour, making it ideal for cold evenings when a standard cup of cocoa just will not do.

Prep: 5 minutes | Cook: 10 minutes | Serves: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups milk
  • 100 g dark chocolate, chopped
  • ½ cup red wine
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar, to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • A pinch of salt

To serve:

  • Whipped cream or marshmallows
  • Grated chocolate or cocoa powder for dusting

Method

  1. Heat the milk in a small saucepan over medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
  2. Add the chopped dark chocolate and cocoa powder. Stir until fully melted and smooth.
  3. Stir in the sugar, cinnamon and salt.
  4. Reduce the heat to low and gently pour in the red wine. Warm through without allowing the mixture to boil.
  5. Pour into mugs and top with whipped cream or marshmallows. Finish with a dusting of grated chocolate or cocoa powder.
