1 arrested during Tshwane scrapyard robbery shoot-out

Police have launched a manhunt for armed robbers who targeted a scrapyard over the Easter weekend.

While police arrested a man for a business robbery in Akasia in the north of Pretoria on Saturday, the other robbers are still at large.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Alfred Legodi, the robbery took place at Akasia Scrapyard.

“A member of Soshanguve K9 was driving in Daan De Wet Nel Drive when he was stopped by someone saying he was the victim of business robbery,” says Legodi, explaining that the victim was allegedly tied up by three unknown men.

He says the victim freed himself and reported the incident to police.

“Police spotted the suspects walking towards Nest Street, towards a green Toyota Venture.”

When they were cornered, the suspects pulled out their guns.

“A shoot-out between the suspects and the police ensued, resulting in police firing nine rounds at the suspects,” says Legodi.

He adds that the suspects jumped out of the Venture and ran, but one was apprehended.

“The Venture had five bullet holes [in it] and it is unknown if the suspects [who] got away were injured.”

Legodi says a case of business robbery was opened at Akasia Police Station for further investigation.

He says police and other law enforcement agencies will continue to wage war against criminals, and urges the community to report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information about the robbery can contact the police via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or on 082 332 4927.
