Police launch manhunt after scrapyard robbery shootout

One of the suspects was arrested on the spot after jumping out of the Toyota Venture but the others managed to get away.

Police arrested a man for business robbery in Akasia in the north of Pretoria on March 28.

The suspect was held in custody until April 2 while police investigated and verified his residential address.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Aflred Legodi said Akasia Scrapyard was the victim of the robbery.

“A member of Soshanguve K9 was driving in Daan De Wet Nel Drive when he was stopped by someone saying he was the victim of business robbery.”

Legodi said the victim was allegedly tied up by three unknown men.

He said the victim managed to free himself and reported the incident to police.

“Police spotted the suspects walking towards Nest Street towards a green Toyota Venture.

He said when the suspects were cornered, they pulled out their guns.

“A shootout between the suspects and the police ensued, resulting in police firing nine rounds at the suspects,” said Legodi.

He said the suspects jumped out of the Venture and ran, but one was apprehended.

“The Venture had five bullet holes and it is unknown if the suspects that got away were injured.”

Legodi said a case of business robbery was opened at Akasia Police Station for further investigation.

He said that police and other law enforcement agencies will continue to wage a war against criminals.

He urged the community to report any suspicious activity in their area.

Those with information pertaining to the suspect still at large are urged to contact police via the Crime Stop number 08600 10111 or on 082 332 4927.
