1 injured as police bust illegal mining operation on Elandsvlei farm

Three suspects are due in a Randfontein court after a West Rand Flying Squad raid on an illegal mining operation in the West Rand.

Three suspects are scheduled to appear in the Randfontein Magistrate’s Court today after two sergeants and a detective from the West Rand Flying Squad apprehended them on Thursday.

Randfontein Herald reports they are believed to be involved in illegal mining on a farm in Elandsvlei.

Acting on intelligence

According to flying squad spokesperson Karen du Plessis, officers acted on information about suspected illegal mining in the area. On arrival, they encountered a group of individuals, believed to be foreign nationals, allegedly engaged in unlawful mining.

The suspects had reportedly been renting space and a storage unit from the farm owner.

Firearms and equipment seized

During the operation, one suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been disclosed, but the suspect received medical treatment.

Authorities recovered two firearms, one of which was self-made, as well as live ammunition, an electrical generator, and equipment used to process gold and copper.

Court appearance pending

The suspects are expected to face charges related to illegal mining, as well as possible contraventions of immigration laws. The injured suspect was taken to Leratong Hospital for treatment, but is due in court today.
