Three arrested in Elandsvlei illegal mining operation

West Rand Flying Squad officers arrested suspected illegal miners on a farm in Elandsvlei, with one suspect wounded during the operation.

Two sergeants and a detective from the West Rand Flying Squad apprehended three suspects believed to be involved in illegal mining on a farm in Elandsvlei last week Thursday.

According to spokesperson Karen du Plessis, officers acted on information about suspected illegal mining in the area. On arrival, they encountered a group of individuals, believed to be foreign nationals, allegedly engaged in unlawful mining.

The suspects had reportedly been renting space and a storage unit from the farm owner.

During the operation, one suspect sustained a gunshot wound to the buttocks. The circumstances surrounding the shooting have not been disclosed, but the suspect received medical treatment.

Authorities recovered two firearms – one of which was self-made – as well as live ammunition, an electrical generator, and equipment used to process gold and copper.

*All three arrested suspects are expected to face charges related to illegal mining, as well as possible violations of immigration laws. The suspect who was shot has been taken to Leratong Hospital for treatment.

*The three suspects are scheduled to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on Monday, April 20, where formal charges are expected to be laid. Investigations are ongoing.
