18-month-old toddler killed by train

An inquest docket has been opened after an 18-month-old girl was killed by a freight train at Qakwini, in Mtubatuba, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to KwaMsane police communications officer Captain Mdletshe, the toddler’s father believes she was following other children to the shop at about 11.30am on Saturday when he was killed on the train tracks, Zululand Observer reported.

Mdletshe added the train was travelling through the area when it struck the toddler, who died on the scene. Investigations are ongoing.

Last month, a man was killed after being hit by a train near Marianhill, in KwaZulu-Natal.

KZN emergency medical Services (EMS) media liaison officer Robert Mckenzie said when paramedics arrived at the scene, they found the unidentified man had already died.

“He was sadly declared dead. Police are investigating the incident further,” said Mckenzie.

The incident occurred between the Mariannhill and Klaarwater train stations, added Mckenzie.
