Police have made a breakthrough in the investigation into ongoing clashes between rival taxi associations operating along the Giyani–Malamulele route in Limpopo.

Letaba Herald reports that the conflict, which first flared up in October and continued into December, has led to eight criminal cases being opened, including intimidation, robbery and assault.

Task team activated to curb escalating violence

Police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashabays four incidents were reported in October, with another four recorded this month as tensions escalated.

In response, the Provincial Taxi Violence Task Team was activated, working alongside Giyani detectives under the direction of Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Crime Detection, Major General Samuel Manala.

Their joint intelligence-driven operation, carried out yesterday, resulted in the arrest of 19 men aged between 29 and 55. The suspects are believed to be linked to all eight recorded incidents.

During the operation, police also seized two patrol vehicles belonging to one of the taxi associations as part of the ongoing investigation.

Provincial police commissioner condemns transport-sector violence

Provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe condemned the violence, warning that criminal behaviour within the transport sector will not be tolerated.

“Lawlessness will never be tolerated, regardless of who is involved,” she said. “We will deal decisively with anyone engaging in acts of violence, especially during the festive season when communities rely heavily on public transport.”

All 19 suspects remain in custody and are expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, facing several charges linked to the dispute.

Police say visibility will be increased in the affected areas and urged taxi associations to resolve their disagreements through lawful and peaceful processes, including engaging the Department of Transport and Community Safety.
