2 accused in murder of officer expected in Mpumalanga court today
A duo’s case, accusing them of murdering a Mbombela police officer in 2024, is set to resume today after being postponed for legal arrangements.
Jacky Sibusiso Ntiwane (34) and Blessing Sifiso Fakude (42) are expected to appear in the Mpumalanga High Court in Mbombela today in connection with the killing of a police officer two years ago.
Both accused appeared in court yesterday, but the case was postponed to allow for legal arrangements concerning accused number 2, reports Lowvelder.
They face serious charges, including murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, and the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition.
The charges relate to a 2024 incident in which Captain Sibusiso Bethwell Mthombothi, who was stationed at the Nelspruit Police Station, was shot and killed.
According to court proceedings, the incident allegedly began when one of the accused attempted to drive out of a tavern and collided with the deceased’s vehicle. It is further alleged that the parties reached an agreement regarding compensation, with the deceased retaining the accused’s vehicle until payment was made.
“The situation reportedly escalated when accused number 1 contacted his co-accused, who allegedly brought a firearm. The two then returned to the tavern, where they found Mthombothi seated with a friend,” says National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Monica Nyuswa.
It is alleged that the accused approached the officer and demanded the return of the vehicle. Before the officer could respond, shots were allegedly fired, fatally wounding the captain. The suspects then fled the scene.
The state indicated it was ready to proceed with the trial, but proceedings could not continue after one of the accused terminated the services of his legal representative.
The case was postponed to today and will continue in criminal court 3.
