2 alleged truck hijackers caught red-handed on Pretoria highway

Despite running into bushes in an attempt to flee, two suspected hijackers were caught and arrested.

A multi-disciplinary law enforcement operation ensured the arrest of two alleged truck hijackers in Pretoria on Tuesday.

According to police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller, information was received that a hijacked truck was on the R21 freeway. Police and security resources were immediately dispatched to the area.

“One of the security service members was able to get eyes on the truck and relayed its location to the other team members.

“The suspects were seen taking the Nellmapius off-ramp… Multiple units were waiting at the escape route.

“When the suspects saw the magnitude of the force waiting for them, they stopped the truck and tried to flee into the bushes,” says Miller.

The members executed an integrated tactical takedown, arresting both men, he adds.

All the stolen stock and the truck were recovered.

“Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the suspects were using a jamming device to block the tracking unit,” says Miller.

The men will face charges relating to truck jacking, possession of suspected stolen property, and possession of a frequency jamming device.

Brigadier Michelle Toohey, the station commander of Lyttelton SAPS, welcomed the arrests.

She says the success comes on the back of many hours and resources focussing on the R21 to prevent escalating hijacking on the freeway.

Various units assisted in the arrests.
