2 appear in court for Bishopstowe farm murder

Two men have made their first appearance at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court in connection with the Bishopstowe farm murder.

Lizo Madukane (35) and Thembelani Majola (28) both opted to have legal aid representation and will remain in custody. State Prosecutor Rene Padayachee said the state opposed bail due to the seriousness of the crime.

“The state opposes bail due to the prevalence of farm attacks and seriousness of the crime. There is also the issue of the safety of the witnesses,” said Padayachee.

The bodies of slain farm manager Daniel de Bruin (58), his wife Glynis de Bruin (60), and his father-in-law Colin Schwegman (86) were found at the Hoegelee Farm after they were attacked and hacked to death on Monday evening.

The discovery of the bodies were made by De Bruin’s son after he received a call that the farm was on fire. Round the clock investigations led to the arrest of the accused in Swapo, Copesville.

Madukane and Majola will reappear on January 12 for a formal bail application.
