2 arrested in KZN after attempted bribe of station commander

Two people are due in court after allegedly offering a R12 600 bribe to release a relative held with an AK47 and ammunition.

The police in KZN have arrested two people in the Upper Tugela area after they allegedly attempted to bribe the station commander.

The Witness reports that, according to police, a person had called the Upper Tugela station commander and arranged a meeting with him.

“During the conversation, the caller mentioned that the meeting was in connection with their family member, who had been arrested in an operation conducted on Friday night. The relative in question was arrested for being in possession of an AK47 assault rifle with 13 rounds of ammunition. The caller who was unknown to the station commander went further and hinted at the possibility of offering money to secure the release of his relative,” said police in a statement.

Police set up arrest

The station commander agreed to meet the caller at KwaDukuza Crossing. Due to the nature of the meeting, the station commander deployed police officers close to the meeting point to effect the arrest should the caller hand over the bribe, reads the statement.

“As prior arranged, the station commander met the person who had contacted him, and he was accompanied by another person. The two individuals handed over an amount of R12 600 to the station commander with the hope that he would orchestrate the release of the arrested relative. In a blink of an eye police officers sprang into action and arrested the two suspects.

“They were transported to Upper Tugela Police Station, where they were charged for corruption and bribery.”

They are expected to appear in the Bergville Magistrate’s Court tomorrow, while the relative who was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition will appear in the same court today.
