2 arrested with explosives and dye-stained cash in Soweto
Authorities have arrested a duo after following up on information linked to an ATM bombing earlier this year.
Two suspects were arrested on Wednesday following an intelligence-driven operation by members of Crime Intelligence Narcotics, the Sedibeng Tactical Response Team (TRT), Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department K9, and private security companies Safeguard Risk Management and Ghost Tactical Services, through the Eyes and Ears Initiative (E2).
Soweto Urban reports that the team followed up on information about a suspect linked to an ATM bombing in Kliprivier in February.
The suspect was traced to Orlando East, where he was found in possession of dye-stained banknotes.
Further investigations led the team to a second suspect in Diepkloof, Zone 4, where explosives were discovered.
“Both suspects, aged 26 and 38, face charges of possession of explosives and suspected stolen money. They will also be linked to the Kliprivier ATM bombing case. They are expected to appear in the Orlando Magistrate’s Court soon,” says Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.
“The team is commended for its collaborative efforts with other law enforcement agencies, and the public is encouraged to continue working with the police by reporting criminal activities.”
