2 Pretoria nature reserve guards found dead in bid to keep warm

Two Groenkloof Nature Reserve security guards, suspected of trying to keep warm during this week’s cold nights, were found dead by their supervisor.

Tshwane metro spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the two were found dead on Wednesday morning.

The deceased guards were employed by a private security company, SIDAF, which conducts security services at the reserve, said Mashigo.

“They were discovered in a storage shelter this morning at 06:40 by a supervisor.”

According to Mashigo, the guards were on night shift and the supervisor was in the process of posting the day shift team when he became aware of the two missing guards.

“No foul play is suspected.

“It is suspected that both died in their sleep through smoke inhalation from an open fire in a drum after they locked the shelter to heat themselves.”

He said the Tshwane metro was saddened by the passing of the two guards.

A case has been reported to the SAPS and Tshwane metro police department for a proper investigation to be conducted.

“The City wishes to convey its heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s families, friends and colleagues.”
